The Leadership Wyoming Advisory Board, the Alumni Board and Executive Team have long engaged in discussion around the development of a Youth Leadership Wyoming Program. Last September, an exploratory committee was formed, made up of volunteers from the Leadership Challenge Institute held in Buffalo, to further investigate this possibility.
After investigating existing program models within Wyoming and around the country, the committee arrived at the realization that a Youth Leadership Wyoming program is best created in a way that capitalizes on the strength, quality, breadth, and depth of the current Leadership Wyoming model. The potential target audience would be ages 14-17 and a working draft of program goals include:
Introduce and develop trustee leadership skills, inner-work, and qualities vital for academic and life success,
Teach young leaders the history and complexity of issues facing the State,
Create networking opportunities with local and state leaders, and
Entice our youth to stay in or return to Wyoming.
The committee’s next task is to seek feedback and gather ideas from the audience we hope to serve with such a program. We recognize that there may be some elements of the curriculum that we deem important and a sophomore or junior in high school might find it less important; others may be incredibly valuable and considered must haves in the development of this type of leadership program. For that reason, we are asking for your assistance in opening a dialogue with young people of this age group.
We think that you, members of our Leadership Wyoming Family, can provide assistance. We have all talked with friends and family about our own Leadership Wyoming experience and shared with them our excitement felt during and after the sessions. We would like to ask you to engage young people that may be your children, neighbors and friends in a discussion about what they would like to learn. Included with this letter please find a LW Youth Program Questionnaire.
If you have an interest in seeing such a program come to fruition, we encourage you to help us gather this valuable information. Please use the questionnaire as a framework to interview junior high and high school students (in which case you would fill out the form) and/or ask them to fill it out for you.
We would like to have all forms gathered by May 15.
